Das Glücksversprechen der Moderne, die in aufgeräumter Formensprache den Fortschritt, Sozialismus und Frieden feierte, war gleichermaßen Verpflichtung zum Optimismus. Für die Jugend galt: „fröhlich sein und singen“ und sich passgenau in das beschworene Bild einfügen.
Doch auf der Rückseite dieses Bildes lauerte die Angst des Kalten Krieges und prägte das Lebensgefühl der später so genannten „no-future-generation“.
Der Film folgt dem Weg einer jungen Facharbeiterin für Schreibtechnik durch die Bilder der Moderne und ihrer Rückseite. Sie protokolliert die Vorgänge, vom Ende her gesehen.
Das fotografische Material entstand 1996-98 auf ausgedehnten Reisen der Autorin durch die ostdeutschen Landschaften und Industriebrachen. Alles war zum Stillstand gekommen, die modernen Gebäudekomplexe ruiniert und geplündert, zurückgelassen wie nach bedingungsloser Kapitulation.

Notes on CITY N
The promise of happiness of modernity, which celebrated progress, socialism and peace in a tidy stylistic vocabulary, was likewise a commitment to optimism. For young people, the motto was: „be cheerful and sing“ and fit in perfectly with the invoked image. But on the back side of this image lurked the fear of the Cold War and the life attitude of what was later called the “no-future generation”.
The film follows the path of a young writing technician through the images of modernity and its back side. She logs the processes, seen from the end.
The photographic material arose between 1996 and 1998 during the author’s extensive travels through the East German landscapes and industrial wastelands. Everything had come to a standstill, the modern building complexes ruined and plundered, as if left behind after unconditional capitulation.
